Double Win at NW Champs

Two Schlapp entries and two Schlapp wins at Friday nights NW Track Champs at Manchester.

Louise Satherley won the womens omnium with four wins from 4 events.
Dave Orrell took the Vets title with 3 wins and a 3rd.
Hopefully more to come from both riders this summer.

Race Season is Go

Over Easter, Louise Satherley ventured south to the Herne Hill Good Friday meet. Unfortunately, the meet was washed out over lunch.
Dave Orrell took to the Mcr boards on the Easter Monday ACT meeting taking two 2nds, a third and running off with most of the cash in the Course des Primes.

Hopefully the start of a good race season for 2010

Dear Member,
2009 is virtually over and hopefully you'll all be thinking about how to make 2010 the most successful season yet. But wait, is anyone going to be riding next year if the current trend continues. Despite low racing numbers the clubs flag was kept flying with World Masters Gold by Derek Smith and European and National Masters Medals (4) by Jeanette and Louise riding against the likes of Vickie P at the Nationals and the Nat. hardtrack sprint champ was racing in YS colours earlier in the year.

As for 2010 we need to pay our subs, dust the bike down, get out there for our sponsors and get the club noticed again. Even if you don't race please continue to support the club, your involvement is critical.
VITAL have agreed to continue to support the club for another 12 months despite the recession. This is tremendous news and a sincere thanks to our sponsors.

so for 2010, lets make it the best yet!

World Masters Games Australia 2009

Derek Smith has attained a Gold Medal in the over 75s sprint category at the World Masters Games in Australia at the Dunc Gray Velodrome. Derek is over in Australia with the British contingency for the World Masters Games and the UCI World Masters Track Championships which have yet to take place. John King also competes.

Former Schlapper Christine Higgs also competes and has gained one Gold in the scratch race and 2 Bronzes in the World Masters Games.

No doubt Derek will keep me informed of his progress by text :-) I have yet to tell him though that he phoned me by mistake and I had a good listen to him packing his kit up ;-) A bit better than the accidental call that I had from Jo Fenwick the other week where I had to listen to her sawing wood!!! The wonder of mobile phones ...............

Medal Joy for Jeanette

Contrary to popular belief, we do have some members competing this year. Jeanette Baxter had a successful Masters season with European silver medals in the Time Trial and Sprint events and another silver in the National Masters Time Trail - nice one Jeanette.

Derek Smith and John King were also present at the Masters Nationals putting up great performances and were unlucky to miss out on the podium positions.

I see Loiuse Satherley flew the club colours at the recent Meadowbank GP mixing it with some top names in both the womens and B events.

Keep up the good work.

Tandem Meet Cancelled

I have had to cancel the tandem meet due to lack of entries. I am gutted that there were no Schlapp entries at all especially after our domination in previous years and gutted that I have had to cancel but with only 5 tandems entered there was no other option.

Happy New Year all :-) let's hope it's a good one.

I'm giving you an early heads up that the tandem omnium will take place again this year on Saturday 23 May 2009 1-4pm at Manchester Velodrome.

I expect all the usual bums on seats and any extra that can get said seats. With more track time than last year hopefully we can provide and exciting programme. This will be immediately after the Paralympic World Cup held at Manchester and so again will involve international tandem teams as well as our own home grown winners ;-)

If you aren't riding then please do feel free to offer some help on the day or beforehand so that we can make this a successful event.

Our main man Mr Kappes cleaned up in Beijing as I'm sure you heard, Gold in the Sprint and Gold in the Kilo for a double Paralympic Medallist - Nice!
I've since taken on a new job as the GB Assistant Sprint Coach working with ex Schlapper Iain Dyer and Jan van Eijden and heading up the Olympic Development Sprint programme.
Looking forward to catching up with you guys on Sat night...

Derek Smith Takes Gold

Last weekend saw one of our most active members competing at the LVRC track championships in Newport. Yet again Derek proves to be the quickest at his age category, adding to an already impressive medal haul that includes gold at World and National level.

Results for the LVRC Champs were:
Fastest Flying 200m
500m TT - Gold
750m Sprint - Gold

Well done Derek, that Majorcan sunshine suits you well.

Joanne Fenwick had also entered but unfortunately could not compete due to injury sustained prior to the event otherwise I am positive we would have been reporting on more gold medals.

Venue - TBA (nowt grand) but Manchester region.

After this years club successes with Paralympic Gold Medalists, European Masters Champions, National Masters Medalists and hopefull Runner Boy bringing back some gold from the Worlds, it must be time for a party.

Hopefully all can make the date;- it doesn't clash with the World Cup nor the Revolution and there should be an SQT Sat lunchtime for those that want to ride or if the weather is looking good for the day maybe a club ride out in the afternoon ?

Bronze Medal for Team Sprint Guys

Ant, Dan, Simon and Gwyn clinched a bronze medal in the Team Sprint Finals at the nationals.

Ant won the minor final in the Keirin yesterday despite drafty holes in his skinsuit by getting caught up in some scottish thistle that was all over the track.

LVRC Track Championships

For those of us over forties who are starting their season in August (!), the LVRC Track Championships might be quite tempting. The event will be held at Newport on the 1st and 2nd November and there will be a full range of events.
You can ride 1 event for £10 or 2 or more events for £20 and if you aren't already a member of LVRC, you can join on or after the 1st September and get a membership and racing licence lasting for 1 year and 4 months for an amazingly reasonable £16!
Women race against men who are 10 years older, so that's ok.

Schlapp riders continued to be on the podium at the Euro Track Masters at Manchester. Having just missed out on a medal in the 500m time trial Angela Undrell took bronze in the womens 2km pursuit - a brilliant ride and well deserved for the effort put in after illness earlier this year.

A strong team consisting of Ant Gill, Gwyn Carless and Si Churton took silver in the Team Sprint 135+ behind a composite team, thus confirming we are the quickest club sprint team in Europe.

Well done and excellent riding to all those that took part.

ANT GILL - EUROPEAN MASTERS SPRINT CHAMP '08

More medals and top performances from Schlapp riders at the Euro Masters Champs at Manchester.

Day 2:
Ski Qualified 8th in the sprint and was unlucky to be drawn against the fastest qualifier in the 1st round but still managed to give the fastest qualifier a run for his money! came 2nd in 1st round and into a 4 up rep [more like a scratch race!] and unfortunatly didnt make it through!

Great rides also in the Womens 500m TT's from Angela taking 4th with 41.436 and Tracey taking 5th with 42.215! Top Stuff!

Day 3:
ANTHONY GILL WINS EUROPEAN MASTERS 30-34 SPRINT TITLE!
Passed through the earlier round with ease winning by the full length of the home straight on almost all occasions until he met Bruce Croall in the Final. Ant won 2-0 in the final and qualified fastest with a 10.9!

Gwyn got a Silver Medal in the sprints tonight! Also progressing through the early rounds with ease. Racing against fastest qualifier Lee Povey in the final.
Great riding all day along with Simon Churton who was knocked out of the competition earlier on unfortunatly!

Gwyn Carless - European Masters Champion '08

Congratulations to Gwyn on an outstanding kilo ride on Monday night at the Euro Masters at Manchester, recording a 1:09 to win gold.

Ski backed up his Nationals Masters silver with another 53 secs ride in the 750mm time trial to take 6th place.

Derek Smith and Tracy Crolla were also in action on the opening day ; both riding well and up there mixing it at the front. Confirmation of their placings to follow once my man on the inside gets back to me.

Tim Lawson from Sceince in Sport has hired the track this Sunday evening at 6-8pm with a view to using it for training for the upcoming Masters racing. Any of you guys are welcome to jump in on the session.

"Beat you" says Jonny Jam-Man Norfolk.

Jon Norfolk and Anthony Kappes take the National Tandem Sprint title at Newcastle yesterday. Silver medal went to Simon Churton and Anthony Runner-Boy Gill.

I only saw the semi's and the finals but the sprinting was outstanding. How could it not be with pilots tandem pairs like these mixing it with Dave LeGrys and Neil Campbell as a pair and Ben Elliott and John Saysell.

Not put all the results of the sprint matches on but hopefully a report on BC site later. As you can see from these results Norfolk and Kappes were well on top but there were great times by everybody especially on such a hot day. Well done guys. You all looked great to me ;-) Great to see so many of our riders dishing it out - keep up the good work :-)

What a lovely warm day we had for spending it indoors! I was glad to watch all our lovely Schlappers getting hot and sweaty and strutting their stuff on the boards! :-0

With Messrs. Norfolk and Kappes trotting out a 10.2 for the 200m tt - a new British record - and generally making the competition their own it was an exciting afternoon. Lots of 11's for the 200m tt appeared - I haven't got the times and no doubt they will appear on here. My favourite 200m tt was Gwyn's and Ski's as Gwyn wrestled the bike across the line :-)

Thanks to everyone for supporting the event - riders and helpers - without every single person there we could never have pulled it off. thanks to the helpers for just getting on with their jobs and making my day an easier one.

Hopefully I've managed to include a link included with Nick's photos of the day - thanks Nick. And best wishes to the Irish girls after their crash - here's hoping they're back to fitness soon.

Dear lovely Schlappers,

After me last few moaning postings I've now got what should be a great field for the tandem event. At last count approximately 18 tandems including 5 Irish tandems, 1 New Zealand tandem, 2 German tandems, 1 Auzzie and I USA. Then we've the locals!! Jon N/Ant Kappes : Gwyn/Ang Undrell : Ant Gill/Si Churton : Ellen H/Aileen McG : Paul H/Ian Sharpe : Barney Storey/Williams? : Ben Elliot/John Saysell : Pete Boyd/Dave Heald and a possible Legro/Campbell combination! Now you cant possibly want to miss that can you? What a line up!!!

Now all I need is just a few more bodies around for small job type thingies that need doing like holding up the riders, ringing a bell or summat like that. There are still a few of you out there that aren't riding and haven't already volunteered and so now 'You're Track Team Needs You'

CLUB MEETING (11.05.08 after the tandem racing)

Hi All,
There have been various calls for a meeting to dicuss the way forward for the club and when better than after the Tandem meet on 11th May. I know you will all be keen to get home but its unlikely we will get as many Schlappers together at the same time, same place, in the immediate future. Please do your best to attend, it shouldn't take that long, and even if you are not racing, come down and watch a bit of the racing beforehand or give a helping hand (we're still looking for volunteers for the event - get in touch with Jeanette)

Tandem Meet! Entries should've been in last Friday and I am sadly lacking in them. Riders have told me they will enter but the absence of entry forms and money is a problem!!! If there is anyone out there in the ether intending to ride let me have an entry form etc. by this Friday. If I dont get any then the event will have to be cancelled!!!! As most tandemists in the UK are Schlappers that is the last thing I want to do but I cant run an event with 2 entries which is what I have got so far. So use it or lose it baby!!!

Time is ticking away and the tandem meet is fast approaching. Various Schlappers have said they will ride but there may still be tandems without bums on seats so if anyone wants to ride then please let me know and I'll check for you. Graham has 2 tandems and I dont know if they're occupied (sp?) and Mark F has one that he cant be there to ride on the day and so I'm looking for some proactivity from you all!!!!!!! hahahahahahahahhaahhahaah

Last year was a great event with fast times. The programme will be set once the entries are in. I'm also informed that if we do a pursuit this should be out of the gate now!!! So, to give our paralympic riders practice that may be a 'must' for the event. The gates then need at least 2 people to hold them down for the start although an anonymous source did state to me that Jon N needed 2 people to hold it down just for him! ;-)

Any queries you know how to contact me. I haven't been flooded with volunteers offering to help so please do feel free to step up!

Schlapp Tandem Meet

Me again :-) Just to add that this tandem meet is to take place on a Sunday between 2pm and 5pm. Entries close on the 18.05.08 and so can all the usual suspects please get your entries to me. Last year Schlappers riding were Jon Norfolk, Ant Kappes, Si Churton, Ant Gill, Paul Hunter, Gwyn Carless, Jon Gribben, Paul Johnson, Mark Fleming (and I know MArk wants to do it again), Aileen McGlynn, Ellen Hunter, Tracy Crolla, Chris Higgs and Eve Dunstan. So, that's an impressive start line if we just get the Schlappers up again.

There will again be representation from Paralympic squads who are here for the World Cup and so it promises to be a good meet. There may be teams from New Zealand and Japan and so it should be exciting.

I also have an Elite rider from San Francisco who is here at the time who would love to be a stoker for the event and so if anyone can help there then please let me know. He's 32 and a sprinter/omnium rider and so could be a good bet!

Tandem Track Meet 11.05.08

Dear All,

Sorry I've been a bit quiet but had a lot of stuff going on! Anyway the Schlapp Tandem track Meet is booked to takeplace on Sunday 11 May 2008. As usual this is to tie in with the Paralympic World Cup so that there will be teams racing from many other countries. The usual Schlappers are requested to get their butts organised to take part as well.

I also need to know who can help out at the event. Last year although I was the named organiser Andrea actually did all the work and so this time I need all the help I can get!!!! So, please volunteer your services now - I've changed email so please now email me nettiebiker@hotmail.co.uk instead.

Even if you can't help then please do come and watch. It is always great racing

The Future ?

Its a long time since anyone posted on here or we've had a club session but the good news is that the club is alive, kicking and healthy, with members old and new showing in the TL results. I'm sure you have been chatting with club mates wondering what's happening etc, especially since Andrea took to the Islands and a few of us have made contact to put together ideas for the way forward.

The initial thought was to hold a club session and ask members for thoughts and ideas, however I'm sure that the trk will be fully booked for all of March and most of April. In order to get things moving please forward your thoughts, ideas, what you want from the club, what you like/dislike about it at present either via the blog or to me via e mail - you can be annonymous but it might be difficult if e mailing!.

Its your club and your input is important, if you want to get more involved speak up, but if you don't say anything we will have to do what we think is best. We may not be able to grant every wish but we can try and cater for the majority.

Yasumitsu Schlapp is a successful club with a great bunch of loyal and friendly members whom I'm chuffed to be part of - lets not lose it.

It has gone very quiet - has everyone retired? Has the club disbanded and nobody has told me?
By the way, the Easter Monday meeting at Manchester is off. Something to do with some world championships or other.
However, there may be an extra event for those who are 40+, as the LVRC are looking to run National Championships at Newport.
And there will be NW Regional championships at Manchester later in the year.

Ok you lot. Vital will be sponsoring for a further year - for which many thanks. Its about time you lot did something for Vital. How about writing a little article about yourself and your acheivements for your local paper including a photo in Vital gear. This means ALL Schlapp members.
Very few of you have done anything bar wear the kit for Vital so get writing please. When the articles are written, post here too. If you cannot post here, send to me and I'll post them.
Tips;
Don't just put results - that won't get published. Write a little story about how you came from oblivion/the Moon/broken back etc and conquered the world/UK/your fears etc. I'll do one too. OK?

Ellen, of the Hunter type and her tandem partner MiLady McGlynn won the World Cup paralympic kilo yesterday in Cali on the new track setting another world's best [not WR since they have not re-measured the track - probably only 230mtrs!] beating the opposition by 4 secs!
Big up the Schlapp crew - or whatever they say. :-)

Shlapp racers were hard at it on Friday at the track league. Young Danny Whelan (14) upset the apple cart when he whopped the older-uns in all his races. He collected 2 wins (kilo scratch and points) and 2 seconds (devil and scratch) before being whisked home in time for bed.

Young Jo Wilman (16) also showed what she was made of (something more than sugar and spice) when she pulled in 2 wins (devil and kilo scratch) and a third (25 lap scratch).

Meanwhile, the other end of the age range was fought over by the older Wilman (40-odd). After 2 DNF's he had to, cap in hand, ask to be moved down a group, and scored another 2 DNF's. A perfect score.

What a great night's racing. Loads of thanks to Pete Lickfold and the officials for every Friday's racing

Masters Championships - 2008

2008 looks like it will be a good year for Masters racing.
Firstly, 4 - 6 July sees the British Masters Championships at NEWPORT (hooray!). Thankfully, this event is now being held indoors, so people won't have to huddle up for warmth and take their wellingtons. Mind you the event is in Wales, so perhaps some people will still take their wellingtons. The event will be run in conjunction with the National Disability Championships.
Then 28 July to 2 August (provisional) sees the inaugral European Masters Championships which will be held at Manchester.
And for the more adventurous amongst you, the World Masters will be held at Sydney between the 14 and 19 October.
So there you go, some top class Masters events and not an outdoor track in sight - smashing!

Schlapp take bronze in the Team Sprint, beating Cardiff CC.

and we also have a team pursuit team entered
Dave Orrell, Paul Anderson, Aaron Woods, and it looks like im goign to have to ride too, as Mark Fleming cant make it!

Some daft records have been set by schlappers this week... including a possible contender for the dsq deck em trophy might be runner boy, after (and i quote...) "His bike tried to self-destruct" forcing a 3rd restart to his heat with chris lyte in the sprint 2nd round.
Gwyn also has the record for "Easiest 3rd place in the B Sprint...Ever" after being given three, yes three ride overs...!

Will update more 2moro with some serious news, rather than just the daft stuff!

Nationals day 1 &2

Top rides by Schlapp riders Gwyn [9th with 1.9], Simon [13th 1.11] & Ski [1.14] in the National kilo.
Day 2 saw Mr Norfolk doing 10.33 with Ant in the tandem quals. RunnerBoy did 10.8 qualifying 5th and got to play in the sprint taking out young Lyte on the way but beaten by Kenny in the end. Gwyn and Simon got to the semis of the B sprint with some great riding. More news when I or someone who is there gets it!

Apparently, 423 enrties have been received for this year's championships in Sydney. This surpasses last year's record of 420 and bodes well for the championship's 3 year stay in Australia.
The entry list should be available sometime next week.

If you are thinking of riding at the championships in Sydney and haven't put you entry in yet then you had better be quick. Entries close today (Monday 24 September).
According to the organizer's website, they are looking for more entries in the over 60s and all women's classes.

National Masters - Scunthorpe - 21-23 September

Amazingly, the weather wasn't too bad over the weekend and only Friday's activities had to be curtailed a bit early because of rain. An early start on Saturday got things back on track.
Pretty successful weekend for Yasumitsu riders and some even managed to win the odd medal or two! By my reckoning, we came away with 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.
Next year's event is going to be indoors at Newport, so that should be a lot drier and warmer!
